Creativity in diamond design continues to expand, thanks to the expanded possibilities offered by the CVD growth process. IGI recently graded another groundbreaking creation, an 8.96 carat Fancy Intense Green cannabis-inspired lab grown diamond. After several rounds of irradiation, along with careful faceting, polishing and laser-etching, the finished “leaf’ measures 16.45 x 19.65 x 3.25 mm.
Our thanks to Ben Hakman and the team at Fire Diamonds for permission to share the images and information.

The Cannabis Plant
Cannabis refers to a genus of medicinal, recreational, and fiber plants belonging to the family Cannabaceae that originated in Central Asia and is now cultivated worldwide. Cannabis contains chemicals called cannabinoids that cause drug-like effects all through the body, including the central nervous system and the immune system. Cannabis may help treat the symptoms of cancer or the side effects of cancer treatment, such as nausea and vomiting, pain, and cachexia or loss of body weight and muscle mass. A tall cane-like variety is raised for the production of hemp fiber, while the female plants of a short branchier variety are prized as the more abundant source of the psychoactive substance tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the active ingredient of marijuana.
