11.28 carat ‘Infinite Blue’ Diamond could sell for $37 Million

On October 5 Sotheby’s Hong Kong will present the 11.28 carat “Infinite Blue” diamond, with a low pre-sale estimate of $26 million, and high estimate of $37 million. The final carat weight, ending in “8,” was deliberately planned, as it’s considered highly auspicious in Asian culture.

When rotated, the number 8 represents the infinity sign, which inspired the name “Infinite Blue.”

Fancy Vivid Blue

The diamond is classified as Type IIb: In addition to scarcity of nitrogen – which is emblematic of Type IIa diamonds – it contains boron which is responsible for the transmission of its blue color. That color was judged to be fancy vivid, the most valuable category.

As described in the monograph:

The Infinite Blue is a stunning 11.28-carat Fancy Vivid Blue diamond, faceted and polished with the inclusion of the number 8 in mind. Well-regarded as an embodiment of prosperity and auspiciousness in Asia, the form of the numerical digit is reminiscent to the universal symbol for infinity. Designed as a ring embellished with brilliant-cut and trapeze-shaped diamonds, the Infinite Blue has a captivating hue that alludes to the vastness of the ocean.
