On June 8 “The Eternal Pink” diamond will go to auction as part of Sotheby’s Magnificent Jewels sale in New York. Its pre-sale estimate of more than $3.3 million per-carat is the largest pre-carat estimate ever placed on a diamond or gemstone, according to the auction house.
“The Eternal Pink” is a 10.57 carat fancy vivid purplish-pink and internally flawless cushion cut diamond. Its vivid color saturation and remarkably high clarity, next to flawless, make it one of the world’s rarest and most valuable gemstones.
“The Most Significant Pink Diamond”
Described by Sotheby’s as “the most significant pink diamond to ever appear at auction,” the diamond was originally a 23.78 carat rough crystal extracted at the Damtshaa mine in Botswana. A team from Diacore polished it into “an exquisite cushion cut, over a period of six intense months, maximizing the diamond’s electric “’bubblegum’ color to full potential.”
World Tour
The diamond will be on display in Hong Kong from April 1-7, marking the 50th anniversary of Sotheby’s in Asia. From there it will travel to Dubai, Singapore, Shanghai, Taiwan and Geneva before arriving in New York for the Magnificent Jewels auction on June 8. Gemstone enthusiasts will be delighted to know the largest ruby ever auctioned will be up for sale at the same event.
